The School of Sport and Exercise Science develops and supports research that is impactful, ethically responsible, and both locally and globally recognised.

Our Research Priorities

Aligned with the 51ÊÓÆµ's strategic plan, our research addresses critical societal challenges through four priority areas:

  • Social Exclusion and Equity in Sport
  • Physical Activity and Public Health
  • Health and Wellbeing Across the Lifespan
  • Disability and Inclusive Sport

We pursue applied research and knowledge transfer that bridges theory and practice, working alongside communities, practitioners, and policymakers to create meaningful change.

Research Degrees and Supervision

We offer a vibrant postgraduate research community with expertise across sport, exercise science, physical activity, sport coaching, sociology of sport, and inclusive sport.

Our Track Record:

  • Over 20 successful PhD completions since 2008
  • Currently supervising 16 MPhil and PhD students
  • UK Council for Graduate Education recognised research supervisors
  • Flexible study options (full-time and part-time)
  • Support for students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds
